ECU at a Glance
ECU is 2–1 and coming off a statement 38–0 road shutout at Coastal Carolina — the Pirates’ first FBS shutout since 2000. They forced 5 turnovers, posted 5 sacks and 9 TFLs, and have not allowed a touchdown in 9 straight quarters. That performance, paired with a 56–3 win over Campbell, has confidence high in Greenville.
Senior QB Katin Houser (MSU transfer) is the engine: through three games he’s at 973 pass yards, 5 TD, 1 INT, completing ~72%. WR Anthony Smith leads in receiving (241 yds). The lone loss was a competitive 24–17 opener at NC State where ECU threw for 383 but couldn’t run (30 rush yds). Against Coastal Carolina the offense was balanced with 293 passing yards and 204 rushing.
The BYU Side
BYU is 2–0 after blasting Portland State 69–0 and methodically beating Stanford 27–3, then resting on a bye. This is the first road game and first road start for freshman QB Bear Bachmeier. FEI and SP+ ratings suggest the ECU is nearly as much a step up from Stanford as Stanford was from Portland St.
Early standouts:
LJ Martin leads Big 12 backs in rushing yards and explosiveness metrics (241 yds, 9.3 YPC) which is notable despite the weaker defenses faced so far. Expect Martin to get many touches this week against ECU.
Will Ferrin has extended his school-record FG streak to 22 straight, including a 56-yarder that tied the school record, and 4/4 against Stanford.
Isaiah Jatta has graded among the top tackles nationally with only two pressures allowed across 46 pass-pro snaps.
On defense, Faletau Satuala has been a disruptive presence on the back end. Through two games he is the highest rated player on the defense according to PFF, including two tackles for a loss against Stanford (including the safety) and an INT, with zero receptions allowed for positive yards this season in 35 coverage snaps.
Team-level snapshot:
BYU’s defense has suffocated opponents (0 and 3 points allowed), while the offense has been efficient enough without showing the full playbook. Bachmeier & Co. faced little resistance vs PSU, then handled a physical Stanford front with a run heavy plan and low-risk throws. OC Aaron Roderick expressed in interviews that they have intentionally kept the passing game limited to give Bachmeier a chance to ease into the speed of the game and gain confidence. In the second half against Stanford we saw more shots downfield, particularly over the middle. Expect more of the underneath game, play action for the deep routes, and manufactured touches for TE Carsen Ryan and WR's Chase Roberts and Tiger Bachmeier as the staff protects the football in a hostile environment.
Matchup: Where This Game Tilts
BYU rush offense vs. ECU front
ECU just mauled Coastal and is living in backfields - 5 sacks and 9 TFL's last week. BYU’s OL, anchored by Jatta, must win early downs so Bear avoids obvious passing situations. If Martin is chunking 4–6 yards consistently, BYU can control the script. Bear also needs to make better reads on his read option and RPO plays - against Stanford he kept the ball a few times where he should have handed it off, resulting in tackles at or behind the line and only 0.6 YPC on 12 attempts, despite a rushing TD.
Explosive passes vs. coverage integrity
ECU's Katin Houser is on time and accurate, spreading the ball to Anthony Smith and the other receivers. BYU’s safeties (Satuala) and corners must stay disciplined against deep crossers and double moves the Pirates like to set up off RPO looks. Last week they hit many quick short routes early, opening the deeper looks as the defense adjusted to try to cover the underneath routes. The two lowest graded players on BYU's defense so far are starting corner Mory Bamba and nickel back Tommy Prassas. When Stanford started moving the ball through the air in the 4th quarter, they were mainly attacking Bamba and Prassas. Prassas was moved over from safety when starting nickel Jonathan Kabeya suffered an injury in Fall Camp, and will likely improve with more reps at the new position. Bamba will need to step up his game this week because he will be picked on again.
Third down & red zone
ECU struggled to run vs. P5 speed at NC State and stalled on 4th down; BYU’s front can replicate that if they win on early downs. Conversely, BYU must turn red-zone trips into TD's, not just field goals. The Pirates defense is comfortable bending between the 20s but has been very efficient in the redzone.
First true road test for Bear
Noise, timing, protections — all new on the road. Expect BYU to build him into the game: quicks, screens, play action shots off successful runs, and tempo changes after first downs to keep ECU’s pressures vanilla. Kalani and A-rod emphasized the road-game dynamics over the bye week.
Keys to the Game
Win early downs on offense. Stay ahead of the sticks with Martin/Moa; protect against ECU's recent backfield feast.
Protect the football. First road start; don’t feed ECU short fields.
Special teams edge. Ferrin’s reliability flips close-game math; win field position.
Prediction
Books have BYU by about a touchdown with a total in the high-40s. ECU’s passing game and defensive havoc rate are impressive, and the Pirates just pitched a road shutout — but BYU’s defense has been the steadiest unit in this matchup so far, and the Cougars’ run game should travel well. Expect the run defense to continue to be elite, ECU will attack the secondary and likely find points on a couple of broken coverages. If BYU stays even in turnovers and avoids constant busts downfield, the Cougars grind out their first road win of 2025.
